Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. We are delighted that you have selected our campus for your education and look forward to working with you as you pursue your goals.

This catalog is your guide to planning for your degree. You will find it helpful now through commencement; virtually every question you might have about UWL is answered in this book. I encourage you to read and continually refer to this essential publication. In addition, you should talk frequently with your college and departmental advisors to ensure that you are taking the right steps toward your educational goals.

Student responsibilities and this catalog

Each department, school, and college within the university establishes specific requirements that students must fulfill to complete a degree program. These requirements address areas such as curriculum and coursework, majors and minors, and residency at the university. Advisors, department chairpersons, academic staff members, and deans are available to help you understand and meet these requirements, but you are responsible for fulfilling them. At the end of your selected course of study, the faculty decides whether you will receive a degree. If requirements of graduation have not been satisfied, the degree will not be granted. For this reason, you must become acquainted with university requirements and regulations, continue to keep information about them throughout your college career, and be responsible for the completion of all requirements.

In addition, the effective administration of the university requires the establishment of broad institutional policies, along with the regulations and procedures necessary to implement them. It is essential that you understand these policies and are familiar with the regulations and procedures that you are expected to follow. This catalog serves as the official curriculum guide throughout your academic career at UWL, provided you maintain continuous enrollment and complete the degree within six calendar years. In compiling our catalog, we have used the most current and accurate information available to us at this time. However, we reserve the right to add, revise, or delete any of the information at any time and without giving prior notice. Often when changes are made, you may follow either your original catalog or the catalog containing the changed curriculum requirements, whichever you prefer. If you add or change programs (majors, minors, certificates, etc.), you will follow the catalog requirements for the program at the time when you declare. At times, changes are applicable to all students, regardless of what catalog you are following. This decision, which is in the best interest of your education, may be based on accreditation or certification requirements, campus or Universities of Wisconsin policies, or program quality. Curriculum changes are reflected in your advisement report/degree audit, which makes it the most up-to-date source of information. Changes, such as prerequisites and credits, which affect individual courses, are applicable to all students. Some colleges may have additional catalog rules to follow such as requiring the primary major and the general education program to be the same catalog year.

This catalog does not establish a contractual relationship. It summarizes the total requirements you must meet before qualifying for a degree, and is presented, therefore, not only to enable prospective students and others to learn about UWL, but also to provide a statement of policies, requirements, regulations, and procedures in a form helpful to you during your college career.
